The theme of this year’s competition was “My Best Shot” and there was an excellent response. Our congratulations to the winners, shown here with some comments from the Editor.

This photograph was taken by Joshua while walking the ‘Levada das 25 Fontes’ and he commented “I like how the light is coming through the Laurel forest and how the steps lead up and away”. He was clearly inspired by the spectacular landscape features of this popular area and the photograph conveys his feeling of amazement so well. The composition he has chosen invites us to climb the steps and imagine the scene beyond. The angular branches of the trees seem to emphasise the wandering course of the pathway and both the sunlight and colouring add to the enchanting effect. We were tempted to refer to this photograph as “Stairway to Heaven“.
Callum’s black and white photograph – a study in tones – creates a more tranquil mood and the textured effect of the foreground emphasises this. The dominant seaweed bank curving feature behind the buoy directs us to the distant swans so gracefully posed, like shots from a film sequence.
This extraordinary image by Jacob, capturing a brief moment when the sunlight strikes the branch of a tree and fans out brilliantly in every direction, can only be appreciated for its full effect in the original resolution sent in to us by Jacob. The dark tones of the building and bush on the left, and those of the tree and its cast shadows on the right, make a striking contrast which captures the magic of the moment!
Charlotte may have carefully created this sculpture of stones herself, but it might well have previously been created by a previous coastal walker. The pebbles look chosen so carefully and arranged with such precision. The detail in the foreground also suggests that there is not a grain of sand out of place. The blurred sunset in the background adds to the mystery.
