Photography Competition 2024 – Winners

Students from all years of the school were invited to submit a photograph inspired by the title “Motion”. There were four prizes on offer, and here are the winners with editorial comments!

FIRST PRIZE

“Car Window”

Ella has effectively captured the sense of speeding along the road by glancing through the car window as a passenger and including the reflections in the wing mirror. The blurred images of the background trees contrasting with the sharper detail in the mirror, together with the slanting horizon line, create a very successful representation of motion.

SECOND PRIZE

“Newmarket”

The readily recognised silhouette of the Newmarket Clock and surrounding buildings creates a powerful composition, set against the fading blue sky in the upper half of Maisie’s photograph, whilst the dramatic acute angular streaks formed by the vehicle lights below suggests the approach to a junction in rush hour during the homeward journey.

THIRD PRIZE

“Surfer”

There is an overwhelming sense of scale in this photograph by Elizabeth which expresses the swelling power of the sea and the formidable energy required by the surfer to ride on the crest of the waves. The zig-zag shapes lead us dramatically along a curved path into the far distance and the contrast of grey tones from dark to light adds to the effect.

FOURTH PRIZE

“Waterfall”

The rugged cliff faces towering high above us and taken from a low level of view in this photograph by Eleanor, suggest streams of water tumbling from above in a slow motion effect and we can imagine the sound of this dramatic scene. The barren greyness of the rock faces are offset by areas of green vegetation, brighter in the lower levels then changing to the darker bottle green of the calmer water in the foreground.
