(at KEGS 2002-2007) writing in 2019

At school, I just wanted to go “into business”, to get a “good job” that “paid well”. After finishing my undergraduate and my Masters degrees I did just that, but it wasn’t stimulating. It wasn’t enjoyable. So I returned to university to complete a PhD, which opened far more doors than I anticipated.

Inspired by my old biology teacher, Mr Grainger, I pursued an academic career researching various sustainable development topics. So far, my work has taken me to four continents – five at the end of this month when I travel to Kenya.

Since leaving KEGS I’ve studied for a further eight years, worked in the private sector (the real world caught up with me, albeit briefly), travelled to over 30 countries, published scientific papers, organised and presented at international workshops, and in general managed to perfect a work-life balance that allows me to enjoy life whilst also achieving my career goals.

Finally, if any of my old teachers are reading this, I’d like to say a big thank you for your influence and support.
