Over the centuries, students of the school have played a wide range of sports. In the 1580s, the only sports choices offered to scholars were shooting with longbows or “run at base”, as laid down in the School Statutes. It’s interesting to speculate what those students would have made of the wide choice of sports being offered to those attending the school today.

The oldest photographs we have go back to the 1870s and they are to be found in the large archive deposited at the Suffolk Records Office in Bury St Edmunds.  We hope to reproduce some of them here in the future.

In 2013, a regular cricket match between a School XI and the Old Burians was revived. You can read a report here. For obvious reasons, not much has been happening recently, but we plan to start arranging new fixtures as soon as circumstances permit. If you would like to take part, please let us know (see below).

We are hoping to draw up a list of people who are willing (once the pandemic is behind us) to play against current students in a wider range of sports than in the past.

At the same time, please feel free to suggest other sports we might add, provided numbers are sufficient to make future matches possible. Before the lockdowns began we had revived the cricket and made history by playing golf with current students. These matches were much enjoyed by those taking part.
